Fort building, wooden blocks, and backyard structures are fun explorations in every child’s imagination. The Popup City at The McNay combines the fun flexible aspects of reusable materials with the precision and thoughtfulness of architecture and design. A set of cardboard buildings modeled after local San Antonio structures were decorated by members of the public attending the McNay’s Spring Family Days.

Using pencils and markers, chalk, collage, and imagination, 450 buildings sprang up on the McNay’s lawn and plaza. Some of these buildings respond to imagery and design elements in the McNay’s current exhibition 30 Americans: Rubell Family Collection. Walking by, one can see landscapes, celebrities, and unique murals adorning the structures of this unique miniature village.
